I have a love hate relationship with coffee! Especially, its keto version with butter and cream. If my body could handle it, I would have coffee all day long. But I can’t. One 12 oz cup, first thing in the morning, will keep me going for a whole day and the evening. And if I have one more around noon, I won’t go to sleep before midnight.
I can name thousands of reasons why I think I should stop drinking coffee. And over the years I quit many times and I went back to it many times for all these different reasons.
This time around, while I am waiting to get gut permeability test results, I decided to ease myself into the new diet, recommended by Paleomedicina, Paleo Ketogenic Diet (PKD), by quitting coffee and tea. (Only water allowed on PKD).
While doing the elimination diet, I already got very close to PKD, but giving up on coffee and tea, was the biggest challenge. Now that I look at it, quitting sugar and dairy wasn’t nearly as challenging as giving up on coffee and tea.
I started the process by introducing coffee substitutes: chicory root and chaga tisane. In the past I tried coffig (roasted fig), maya nut, roasted cacao beans (Crio Bru), and decaffeinated coffee itself. You can get them easily on Amazon.
Though all of them are flavorful options, none of them really eliminated the pain of caffeine withdrawal: drowsiness, sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, lack of motivation, headaches to name a few. About two days later the worst was over, but the full coffee detox came 10 days later; hello world, I was back!
I hope one day, after I complete PKD, I will be able to enjoy occasional cup of coffee… until then… I am on the mission to heal my gut!
