HEALTHY LIFESTYLE TIPS – Part 1

It’s time to put many of the healthy lifestyle tips into a comprehensive list that can be easily implemented.

ELIMINATE SUGAR AND SEED OILS

If there is a single thing you can do to improve your health fast and in a meaningful way is to cut down sugar and get rid of seed oils completely from your diet.

Healthy sugar consumption per day should not exceed 25 grams (about five teaspoons), including all starches.  This means that most of your calories will have to come from proteins and fat. The good news is, that’s how we evolved so your body will adapt quickly.

If you aren’t ready to take a plunge into the carnivore diet, that’s fine, but make sure proteins and fats from animal sources are at least 80% of your diet. Seed oils which we commonly call vegetable oils are one of the worst dietary inventions. They aren’t found in nature and need bunch of chemical processes to make them edible. Our bodies have hard time breaking them down and it takes weeks to clear it from our system. Not to mention the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 acids is 20:1! (Normal is 1:1).

WATER SHOULD BE YOUR MAIN SOURCE OF HYDRATION

I used to think that drinking tea and coffee counts for hydration, I was wrong. Let’s get back to basics: pure clean water from a good source is what you should care about.  Even herbal teas don’t make the cut for hydration. Sure, if you enjoy some other drinks from time to time, but know it’s for your gustatory enjoyment, hydration wise it doesn’t count.

I don’t even want to mention sugary concoctions like soda or commercial juices. They are full of sugar, and preservatives, you have no business drinking them if you care about your health.

I have been using Berkey filters for the past 15 years. The difference in flavor is noticeable. I notice it, and anybody that visits me and drinks my water will point it out as well.

The other day I was relegated to drinking bottled water and even though I drank a lot, I couldn’t hold this water in my body, and didn’t feel hydrated. When I returned home and drank my own water, within minutes I felt a lot more hydrated.

LIFT WEIGHTS / HIIT

The more of the good thing often isn’t better, and this is true for exercise as well. Well-constructed weight training or HIIT routine need as little as 30 minutes and you will reap a lot more benefits than spending hours running on the treadmill. Both weight training and HIIT help to release Human Growth Hormone which has many interesting benefits to our health, and which steeply declines as we age. If you are one of these busy people saying: I just don’t have the time for work outs, you don’t have to. Give a try to weightlifting or HIIT even if the only place you can exercise is your living room.

ELIMINATE SNACKING

Snacking is yet another modern invention absent in most of our evolutionary past. Our bodies need break from insulin throughout the day. Each time you put something in your mouth, your body will produce insulin. If you are at the beginning of your journey, and you just need to have more than one or two meals a day, at least cut down on snacking before bedtime.  By far, the most metabolically damaging habit is snacking at bedtime. Keep in mind though, unless pregnant or directed by your doctor, your goal should be to eliminate all snacking altogether.

BREATH THROUGH YOUR NOSE

Breathing through your nose is yet another underestimated healthy habit. There is a whole list of chronic disorders that can be traced back to inappropriate breathing. Next time you take a walk look how many people have their mouths slightly open; they are mouth breathers. We evolved to breathe through our noses, so make a conscious effort to nose breathe. It is very important to the health of your brain, quality of your sleep, digestion, nervous system to name a few. If you have kids, pay special attention that from the beginning they breathe through their noses. Breathing through nose can be challenging at first, you will feel like you don’t have enough air. If you don’t use your nose there will be natural obstruction in your nasal passages because you don’t use them.  The doctor that did probably most of the research about it is Dr. Buteyko, and the person that popularized it here in the west is Patrick McKeown.
